What is Tae Kwon-Do? Tae Kwon-Do is the Korean art of self-defence and means "The Art of Hand and Foot Fighting". Tae Kwon-do indicates the technique of unarmed combat for self-defence, involving skilled application of punches, kicks, blocks, dodges and restraints. Most of all Tae Kwon-do is about self-imposed discipline.
Am I too old to start? We have members of all ages who train in Tae Kwon-Do. You truely are your own limits. Age is just a number.
How old must my children be before the can start Tae Kwon-Do? We take children from 5 years of age. Your child, by then, will have the basic motor skills required and will be able to concentrate longer than younger children.
Do I have to be fit? Tae Kwon-Do will improve your own level of fitness.
Do I have to be flexible? Tae Kwon-Do will improve your flexibility and mobility and your all round fitness.
Do I have to have a special uniform? Any loose fitting clothes will do to start off with. ie. tracksuit bottoms and a teeshirt.
Who will be in my class? All our classes are mixed ability, beginners through to black belts, letting you advance at your own pace under the tuition of qualified instructors.
Will I be able to defend myself? Yes, the skills you will learn will enable you to be able to react to different attack situations using blocks, restraints, punches, kicks that have been taught in the class.
Do I have to grade (take belts)? It is purely optional but advisable. A belt is a visual sign of how well you have progressed. All new beginners are given a white belt indicating the first level of Tae Kwon-Do.
Can I achieve my black belt? Yes. There are ten steps to black belt. Starting with the white belt which is given to you at the beginining. To get to black belt it will take approximately four years. This will enable you to become mentally and physically competent at Tae Kwon-Do.
Do I have to enter competitions? No. Competitions are optional, yet are great fun and social days away.
Does Tae Kwon-Do cater for people with disabilities? Yes. We will do our best to make Tae Kwon-Do fit your abilities. The TAGB have black belt students who have disabilities, ie. amputies, blind, and deaf, etc.
